Several local xB owners have said that installing a tie-bar between the front shock towers on my 05 xB would be a very good upgrade at a low cost. What is the current recommendation -- brands, etc?

It's really not worth it. The shock towers are integrated in the firewall, and as a result, there is very little flex.
I have a Hotchkis one on mine, but it really didn't make a significant change.
If you really want to make a dramatic change in handling, opt for a rear sway bar. A Progress or TRD bar can be had new for about $160. It is one of the most significant things you can do for the handling of the xB.
